The Big Idea

It's clear to me, that factory farming isn't merely an institution set out to torture animals. All though there is plenty of money to be had in the factory farm industry, most individuals could care less where there meat comes from, or how it's processed. The majority of the world just cares that there is plenty to go around and that the cost is low. Factory farms have in a sense, kept the world population from starvation, as millions of pounds of meet and poultry items are processed daily and provided to the people at an inexpensive. But what about the effect on rural communities throughout Iowa? Are the factory farms detrimental to economy and environment of these small farm towns?

It's easy to see that Iowa is at a crossroads. While the majority of the rural population is focused on large factory farming, there are several organizations that push for more decency when dealing with animals and farms. But, in a matter of fact and factual, there is no substantial evidence to state that factory farms are destroying rural America. In fact, many neighborhoods and towns embrace factory farming as a means to boost the economy in an area and provide more jobs for a greater number of people.

While economically speaking there are rare impacts on the community, environmental hazards are more of a valid concern. But as a rural dweller, I would be more more concerned with housing growth and developments disrupting my private way of life than a factory farm trying to find privacy as well. If you are trying to embrace the country life, nothing can be more country than offering up your town to some good ole pig farmers. And environmentally speaking they would be much cleaner than an overpopulated countryside.

I set out to discover whether or not I thought factory farming was good or bad for Americans., but the evidence really hasn't been strong enough for me to be swayed either way. In some ways, I can understand how citizens might be concerned about the smell of a sow farm close by, but I also understand the justification and desire to make profits and feed the world. I will leave this journey with a greater cause to end the lies and myths about factory farming and I'll never again have to question the validity of the factory farm.
